A Legacy of Strength: Celebrating the Echota Cherokee
Falkville, Ala. - Native American Heritage Month invites us to honor the stories woven into our nation’s history — and for Seabrook Solutions, that story begins with our CEO, Lang Sims.
As a proud member of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama, Lang leads our Woman-Owned, 8(a) Certified, Native American–owned small business with the same resilience and spirit that’s defined the Echota Cherokee for generations.
Situated in Falkville, Alabama, down a gravel road on Lacon Mountain, sits the Echota Cherokee Tribal Grounds — a quiet reminder of a people who endured and rebuilt.
Lang’s family story traces back to the Trail of Tears, when many Native Americans were forced from their homes. Her ancestors escaped into the forests of North Alabama, where the Echota Cherokee would one day reclaim their identity and fight for recognition, finally achieving state recognition in 1984.
“The struggles they went through and how we came to be in Alabama are part of who we are,” Lang shared.
Though much was lost—language, customs, and traditions—one value has endured: respect for the land.
“Farming is part of our heritage, living off the land and preserving it for future generations,” Lang said. “There’s an old Indian proverb: We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”
From days spent farming with her parents and grandparents to earning her degree from UAH, Lang’s path has been one of steady growth and purpose. As the leader of Seabrook Solutions, she continues to embody the Echota Cherokee principles of education, resilience, and stewardship.
As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, Lang encourages everyone to take a moment to learn about the Echota Cherokee Tribe and other Native American nations.
